Emily's word a day in March for school is "cataract". I don't know who picks these words but last month it was scaffolding at that was a lot easier. For her "day" she has to find the definition of the word in a dictionary, then write it in a sentence. First of all, who owns a dictionary anymore? We look everything up on line. (By the way .. she told me she couldn't use Wikipedia again - oops!) We found the definition and it means: "a clouding of the lens of the eye or of its surrounding transparent membrane that obstructs the passage of light" OR waterfall; especially : a large one over a precipice c: steep rapids in a river (Did anyone else know that?? I didn't!!) Then she wrote it in a sentence - "The guy had cataracts." Works for me. Also as part of this little "fun-itivity" we have to make a di-o-rama. Like I said - last month it was easier. And, I HATE eyes. Yes, it's an awfully strong word but they freak me out. They're gross. So, I looked up (online) what different kinds of "eye activity" you could do. I came across these eye cookies. And, if you know me .. you know that I can't bake and therefore I couldn't have picked a worse activity! So, we went to the store and bought pre-made sugar cookie dough and baked that up. Heck, I even had trouble getting the cookies cut straight. But, I got them baked - some were dark brown and others were barely done. Oh well! We then proceeded to decorate them. (See pictures). I ended up with frosting all over the kitchen. And, somehow I ended up with red frosting on the butt of my pj's. I don't know how and I don't want to know. It's easier that way. This morning I packed up 22 cookies and took them (and Emily) to school for her big day. I hope no one gets sick. (yikes!) God Bless America and God Bless our fine education system. Every 3rd grader should know what a cataract is. The end. |
