Grandpop Nardone was a accordion Manufacture & expert accordion repair man.
He was born in Naples, Italy and came to America in 1905 with his wife Angelina. They lived in sourth Philly at 1121 Catherine St. They raised 7 children. He was a really good bocci player.
He was very well known in South Philadelphia.
When he was very young he played the accordion by ear, playing records. He supported his family by playing on the street and in taprooms or bars. He also played for President Hoover in the court yard at the White House.
He started to manufacture accordions on the first floor of his house. he taught himself by taking the accordion apart. He started making them for some of the most professional players in and around Philadelphia. My father Anthony started to help him at 13 years ofd, after school & Saturdays. When he was in his teens he helped him make them full-time. It took both of them 2 1/2 months to make 1 accordion, working 12 hours a day. Most of the parts were made by hand. They both new all the most famous players & accordion manufacturers. After Frank Nardone retired my father, Anthony took over the business, until he retired and moved to Florida in 1981.
Mike if you're reading this, happy birthday, and I would really appreciate it, if you put a picture of your accordion that says Nardone & Son, on this posting.
